When the franchise first joined the league, they were first named the New Jersey Americans. The original franchise was based in New Jersey and was fronted by players like Bill Austin, Art Heyman, and Tony Jackson.
Their home jersey featured a white base with blue and red stripes on the side when they were first inaugurated in 1967-1968. In addition, it carried a bold font for the team name “Americans.”
Early Nets fans would be familiar with Dr J’s Stars and Stripes design. The team first used this jersey in the 1971-1972 season, the same time they moved to Nassau Coliseum, New York.
This is the jersey design that the Nets used when they won their first championship series in 1974 and another one in 1976.
Julius Erving was also awarded Most Valuable Player for three consecutive years during these years.
The home white jersey features a straight, bold, and spaced lettering of the script “Nets”. It also has a thin red stripe outside a thick blue line and three white stars.
They brought back this design during the 1983-1984 season but added “New Jersey” in the red stripe.
For the 1981-1982 season, the Nets moved back to their original home, New Jersey. They also changed their jersey into a more classic look to coincide with the move.
They used the original “Nets” script with the tailed “s” for their home white jersey. Their away jersey was a blue base with a red “New Jersey” script.
The Nets revamped their jersey design and veered away from the classic script to open a new season and a new decade. The new jersey featured more modern lettering and modern colours.
The road jersey featured a “tie-dye” design that showed gradient blue streaks across the jersey. However, the tie design wasn’t that popular as the Nets had to change the colour to a solid blue after only one season.
The franchise’s most well-known jersey was the one they wore for 15 straight seasons. This was the jersey design where the Nets made back-to-back finals appearances with Jason Kidd.
With a modified “Nets” lettering from the previous jersey, the team went through various colours of road jerseys, from grey to red.
As the Nets moved to their new home in Brooklyn, their jerseys now sport a more straightforward look. Black and white have been their primary colours for the first time in the franchise’s history.
Today, their jerseys have evolved to more modern and hip styles, with various designs on their road jerseys.
